Practice
|
| Q |
Hi,John, One of my friend and I wanted to improve our oral English ,so we decided to practice it everyday .But we found it was difficult to keep on it because we could not find topics to discuss.Sometimes we found it was not easy to explain it in English ,so we spoke in Chinese. The more Chinese we said, the less efficient our practice was.Should we keep on practicing?
|
| A |
Hi, Candy, I am glad to hear that you and a friend are getting together to practice. If you keep at it, you will both improve. You should not use Chinese at all because once you start using Chinese, you are defeating the purpose. Use gestures if you have to, but no Chinese! As for finding topics to talk about, to start with you can talk about what you did the day or the evening before. You can also play a game. Click here to see what games can be played.

To Be Exact
|
| Q |
"To be exact" or "to be exactly" Dear sir,I wondered how to use this phrase? And which one is the correct form.thanks.
|
| A |
Hi, Emmanuel, The correct phrase is "to be exact".e.g. I have a bunch of children; five, to be exact! She lost a lot of weight. Fifteen kilos, to be exact. Though "to be exactly" is not a proper phrase, you can use that when "exactly" is used to modify an adjective. e.g. To be exactly right, I would say that the thief stole fifty-two dollars and forty cents from us. - John

Learning English in Japan
|
| Q |
Dear John, i 've studyed in Japan for over two years.I found the biggest differences between Japanese English learners and Chinese English learners is the Japanese English learners' pronunciation that is really Japanese. And so does some Japanese English teachers.I cannot stand it!I have few opportunities to practise my oral English in my university. In Japan, the hottest English studying way is the strategy of TOEIC. Many hign point getters cannot speak English in normal way.Can you tell my how to improve English in Japan.Thank you very much. Chie
|
| A |
Hi, Chie, That is very interesting! In order to improve English in Japan, I guess you will need to have the right material / teacher to listen to so that you can learn the accent that you want - American, British, or whatever. Watching English movies and TV shows is one way - if they are available there. Doing language exchange with a native English speaker will be another.- John

Back Elevator
|
| Q |
Dear teacher; Here I want to ask one question. The Text"Then she heard the back elevator close" Could you tell me it's meaning the text. thank you!
|
| A |
Hi, Hower, Perhaps you were confused by the word "back" since it is usually not used as an adjective. In conversations, people are not very particular about tenses. Here is another way of saying that: then she heard the rear elevator close. So the word "back" was just used to describe which elevator. The "back elevator" refers to the elevator in the back.- John

Improving Oral English
|
| Q |

Hi, Nancy, Perhaps the main problem is not that you don't know how, but that you feel too self-conscious and nervous when you try to speak in English.Hence, since you already know quite a bit of English, the goal now is to overcome your being self-conscious. And since you want to work on conversational English, it will be good to listen to conversational English. I would suggest that you don't try to memorize. Just listen to it many times and say it alongside. Listen to it when you are on the bus, when you are walking around, when you are cooking, etc. After a while, you will remember it even if you have not tried to memorize it. - John

English Movies
|
| Q |
Dear John I have learned English for many years.I'm always proud of my English. But sometimes I am puzzled because I can't use it freely of my own. Everyday I practice Enlish through all kinds of ways. I like reading English newspaper, watching English movies, and Enjoying English music.Besides I am a kind of crazy of English. EVery Enlish words feel so real to me that I even think of them as musical symbols. Unfortnately,I am a little disppointed with myself since sometimes I can't understand the orignal version of English movies or else. Therefore, I feel I am so superficial.
|
| A |
Hi, 赵文杭, Some English movies are not easy to understand because the English may have a different accent from what you are used to. Researchers say that the last hurdle for learners is the difference in accents.- John

Hi, Valgur, Often times oral English has simpler structure than written English because it sounds more natural - especially in American English. It is more important to be able to express oneself so that others understand you than to construct interesting sentences.- John

Yes, CV, it is true that reading novels is a great way to improve your English. A lot of children and youth in western countries learn it that way too. I think it is helpful because our minds can absorb the language more easily as we process the story using the right side of our brains - picturing the story in our minds. And listening to stories will be similar. - John

Hi, Wangyan, Yes, they can all be used as verbs especially in conversation. For example:1. He upped his prices on us. 2. He backed down after Joe apologized. 3. He downed a whole gallon of water after his 10-kilometer run. "Date back to" is probably a bit different from "Back to", but it may depend on the context. - John

Trends in Fashion
|
| Q |
Hi John, Could I write the phrase "The latest trends in fashion" as "The latest trends of fashion" ?
|
| A |
Hi, Wangyan, There is a slight difference between the two. The latest trends in fashion refer more to the style in different categories, while the latest trends of fashion can mean fashion as a whole. For example, the latest trends of fashion is moving toward a simpler look. Long dresses are back in the latest trends in fashion. In general, "in fashion" is more often used.- John

|
| A |
Hi, Wangyan, This is an excellent question. But the answer is not that simple. A lot depends on the context and sometimes they are interchangeable. Then in proverbs or idioms, they are not interchangeable. e.g. 1. The end does not justify the means. 2. When there is a will, there is a way. - John

Hi, Wangyan, No, "I was pleased that the manager had decided not to be angry with me for so rude" is not a correct sentence. Here are the different ways of saying it: 1. Laugh vs Laughter
|

Hi John, Is the noun "laugh" different from "laughter"?
|
| A |
Hi, Wangyan, Excellent question! Laughter is uncountable, while laugh as a noun is countable. Laughter is often used when there are a lot of laughs, especially they are all at once by many people for more than a short instant. e.g. They roared with laughter after they found out that he went into the wrong bathroom and was chased out by an old lady. But with a laugh, he just shrugged off the embarrassing incident.- John

Hi, Taichenyi, It is true that graduates of certain majors can find a job more easily, but then I think there needs to be a balance. If one majors in something that he has no interest, he may do very poorly. With the economy that is growing so fast in China now, you probably won't have a problem finding a job. But you should continue to upgrade yourself and learn more skills so that you can make a career change later if you want. Most people change their careers mid-way.- John

Ranging from
|
| Q |
'Ranging from "Eve teasing" - as sexual taunting is often referred to in South Asia - to disturbing numbers of gang rapes, sexual harassment is affecting women in villages and cities alike.' May I rewrite above sentence as 'Ranging from sexual taunting to disturbing numbers of gang rapes, sexual harassment is affecting women in villages and cities alike.'?
|
| A |
Hi, Rosa, Yes, you can do that since the phrase "as sexual taunting is often referred to in South Asia" is just for explaining the term "Eve teasing". To make the sentence clearer, you can even write: 'Ranging from "Eve teasing" to gang rapes, sexual harassment is affecting women in villages and cities alike.' That's because "ranging from ... to ..." is a pair and it is clearer when both have similar things behind them. Example: "Ranging from 70-year-old men to 4-year-old children, everyone at the park lined up to get a free cup of ice cream." - John

Special vs Particular
|
| Q |
Dear John, Could you tell me how to distinguish SPECIAL and PARTICULAR ? Thanks
|
| A |
Hi, Habori, Good question! It may be hard to explain. So I will just give you some examples.1. He is a very special friend of mine. (Cannot use particular) 2. He is very particular about what he eats. (Cannot use special) 3. Welcome to our store! Are you looking for anything in particular? (Cannot use special) 4. She is a very special person. (If "particular" is used instead, it means entirely different - it then means that she is choosy, or picky.) Hence, it is best not to translate the word to understand it, but to understand its meaning in the context.

Have Not Had
|
| Q |
hi,John Doe, could you tell me the words:"...these have not had any effect...".Why "have not had ..."?I think it is : "these have not any ..."OR "had not any .....".IS IT ALL RIGHT?
|
| A |
Hi,方方圆, Good question!"Have not any" is the British way of saying it, while "have not had any" is the American one - but nowadays, due to the American influence, I understand that many people in UK also say it the American way. On the other hand, "had not any" is a bit different. It is the past tense. - John
